Bike Sharing and Sustainable Transportation in Florence

Sustainable transportation refers to any means of transportation that is ‘green’ and has a low impact on the environment. It is generally accepted that sustainable transport implies finding a proper balance between (current and future) environmental, social and economic qualities. Examples of sustainable transportation include walking, cycling, transit, carpooling, car sharing, and green vehicles.

Keeping this in context, the Municipality of Florence (Comune di Firenze) recently announced the arrival of a fleet of 1,500 bicycles (in Italian bici) and 650 e-bicycles for the tourists and residents of Florence. The aim of this initiative is threefold. The first goal is to make available to citizens an efficient and complementary service in the sense of integrating classic public transport.
