Bayou Life
Artist Statement

Bayou Life is a photography exhibition and the outcome of two years of research and collaboration. The project began in the summer of 2024, when I first arrived in Montegut for ethnographic research funded by the NSF Rural Confluence Grant. One month into my fieldwork, I began to experience and understand the hospitality of bayou residents. The community welcomed my colleagues and me into their homes and daily lives, sharing both the difficult realities and the beautiful aspects of life down the bayou.

This exhibition showcases selected photographs from life down the bayou. The images offer moments, details, and relationships shaped by land, water, memory, and social change. Rather than explaining the place, they invite viewers to spend time with what is visible and what remains unsaid.

I have documented this experience through photography, and community collaborators captured several photographs in this collection. Using disposable cameras, collaborators photographed people, places, objects, and everyday scenes that hold personal and cultural significance for them. Their images expand the project beyond documentation, offering a view of bayou life from within the relationships, memories, and practices that sustain it.

We hope these images generate discussion about sense of place and critical issues. This collaborative photography exhibition is an experimental effort to share the human experiences and forms of knowledge that shape bayou life.
